Route: LHR (London) to HBA (Hobart), 24 Mar 2004
Comments: This lounge is a vast, built in 2003 for SAS
and Air Canada, it is now used as the standard Star Alliance lounge in
Heathrow Terminal 3, so Varig and Thai Airways use it as well. However
(apart from the selection of newspapers) it is 100% an SAS lounge, with
Scandinavian styling throughout. For which read polished wood floors,
white walls, and achingly trendy. There is a small section with a view
over the T3 apron. I actually prefer this lounge to the United and Singapore
Airlines offerings thanks to the nice decor.
Food is good, but not great. There is a load of cheese to choose from,
with Boursin & Smoret in tubs, plus two types of cheddar and red Leicester.
There are digestives or Cream Crackers to put them on. There are some
tubs of veggies, with peppers and cauliflower (but oddly, no dips). Two
types of nuts in bags. Three types of fruitcake, all sealed in plastic.
There are two bars. The lower level has Singa Beer (in bottles) and Carlsberg
(on draft). There are two White Wines (both Chardonnay) and four red wines.
There are no spirits downstairs, but in the bar upstairs there is a small
alcove with two whiskeys, two gins, a vodka and a port.
All in all this is a great lounge. The atmosphere is fantastic, with plenty
of places to go and things to do - there is even a good library! - and
the food, while nibbles, is of good quality.
