Flying from: Tokyo NRT to Los Angeles LAX, 13 January 2003
Aircraft type & class: B-777, Business
Meal type: Dinner - There was a choice of Japanese and Western meals. I chose the Japanese. There was a common "amuse gueule" with some cold meats
and a piece of pate. I had a kir royal with that. The appertizer (lower right plate) consisted quick-poached crab, fresh sea-urchin roe, preserved salmon roe, and marinated herring roe. The soup, in the covered black bowl, was poached red salmon with shittake mushroom and some vegetables in miso. The seasonal specialities (in the upper left bowl) were marinated flounder and red salmon with Citron vinegared soy sauce. The bowl in to the left of the soup was Kobachi, Japanese buckwheat and white wheat noodles. Tha main dish, in the lower left, was yellowtail grilled, with some grilled or stewed vegetables and rice wrapped in white paper. The desserts and cheese plates were common to both the Japanese and Western meals.
Drink: Duval-Leroy Fleur de Champagne Brut, NV, negoticant white and red Burgundies, Cognac VSOP. Coffee, tea and Japanese tea available.
Rating 1-10 (worst-best): 8

Flying from: New York JFK to Tokyo NRT, 30 November 2002
Aircraft type& class: 747-400, economy
Meal type: Dinner - The main course was rice with beef, veggies and a teriyaki-style gravy. No complaints here: it was satisfying and tasty, if kind of uninspired. Accompanying this was a plate of cold meats, including what looked like salami and shrimp. There was a bun and some kind of sweet thingy. But what set this meal apart were the noodles, which came with a package of "Sauce for the Noodles" (see image 014). This was a kind of dark, smoky liquid which I can compare only with salty lapsang souchong tea.
Drink: Lots of free saki
Comments: "Hats off to ANA. They kept me well fed through the whole 14-hour trip. I ate every scrap on every tray, even when I wasn't sure what it was."
Rating 1-10 (worst-best): 6.5, not half bad
