Flying from: Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) to London Heathrow
(LHR), 1 June 2003
Flight duration: 45 minutes
Aircraft type & class: A319, Club Europe
Meal type: Dinner - Salad with cold cooked Salmon and cous-cous,
chocolate with crispy bits and sultanas.
Drink: Piper Heidsick Champagne (NV)
Comments: Can anyone enlighten me as to what the point of cous-cous
is? Tasteless but trendy is all I can think. So why bother with it? All in all
this meal was rather bland. There is only so much you can do with a cold salmon
filet. The chocolate thingy was yummy though. Strangely they decided to serve
the meals and then serve the drinks about ten minutes afterwards so you were
left without anything to drink with your meal to begin with.

Meal type: Lunch - Salad with Parma Ham, Bacon and goats cheese
with oregano & garlic dressing and marinated olives; chocolate with crsipy

Drink: Piper Heidsick Champagne, Coffee
Comments: Yummy! This was excellent. Proof that you really
can cater a decent meal on such a short flight. If there had been time I'd have
had two. Well done BA. Only very slight downside was that they were unable to
tell me what sort of cheese it was, but it tasted yummy all the same.

Flying from: Prague to London-Heathrow, March 2003
Flight duration: 90 min
Aircraft type & class: Airbus 319, Club Europe
Meal type: Breakfast, possibly crew - Still hungry after my
first breakfast (see previous image), I asked the Cabin Service Director for
another meal, and she gladly obliged. This meal was of lesser quality than the
one I had and looks remarkably like one of the BA crew meals. It is not the
meal from Coach as that was a ham pastry. The scrabled egg was very plastic
like, the hash brown dried out, and the tomato uncooked. Drink:
Water, Orange Juice.
Comments: "I appreciate the fact that one of the crew
gave up their meal for me. (Or perhaps more cynically, gave me the crew meal
and took the extra Club Europe meal?) Note in this picture the delicious breakfast
pastry, bread, and decorative tea cup. Also, note the unfolded cardboard wrapper
between the roll and teacup-- it has a beautiful black and white picture of
"London, 6:30 am September" and is used to wrap the utensils. This
picture nicely complements the "classic" English photographs in the
ClubEurope cabin, and is a cheaper knock-off of the brushed aluminum holders
in First and Concorde."

Flight duration: 9hrs. 40min.
Aircraft type and class: 767 cattle class (aka "World

Meal type: Asian Vegetarian "light breakfast" - 3
small sandwiches and an organic peach yogurt. The sandwiches were eggplant mayonnaise
with a light curry flavor (7), a delicate grilled vegetables and herbs (8),
and a flavorless, styrofoamy cheese and tomato pub reject (2). The yogurt was
a little too sweet, but a nice change from strawberry banana (9).
Drink: Water
Comments: "While they were serving this meal, the sun
was rising over Mt. Kilimanjaro outside, which is such a beautiful sight that
it didn't really matter that this wasn't much of a breakfast."

Flying from: New York JFK to London LHR, 23 March 2003
Flight duration: 7 hours 00 minutes
Aircraft type & class: Boeing 747-400, First Class
Meal type: Dinner - Canapees; Goat cheese and pine nut torte;
Lamb shank, olive oil mash and roasted root vegetables; Stilton, unpasteurised
Boerenkaas and Crottin Jeune Goat Cheese; Vanilla panna cotta with mixed berries
and vanilla ice cream.
Drink: In the lounge: Tanqueray no. 10 gin & tonic. In
the air: Krug Brut Grande Cuvee NV; Domane Wachau Riesling Smaragd Terrassen
2001; Meursault, 2000, Chartron et Trebuchet; Chateau Desmirail, 1996, Grand
Cru Classe Margaux; Warre's, 1986, Reserve Tawny Port; Chateau Filhot, 1998,
Grand Cru Classe Sauternes.
Comments: In the JFK Concorde Lounge
the evening started off with a G & T. For pre-flight dining, it was possible
for you to take caviar with the usual accompaniments, although it wasn't on
the menu. In the air, the champagne started off the flight and was served with
some canapees (sorry, I ate one before remembering to take a snap). The Goat
cheese and pine nut torte was rather tasteless in my opinion, but the Riesling
and particularly the Meursault were very good. In retrospect I should have taken
the scallop and spinach ravioli option. The Lamb shank was good (but not the
most tasty I've ever had) and the mash in particular was excellent, being heavily
loaded with lightly sauteed garlic whole clove segments: quite daring for airlines!
Of course the Margaux complimented the lamb perfectly. The cheeses were OK but
as usual, they are pre-prepared on a plate. It would be far more impressive
to see a full cheese board as they do in restaurants. I find soft
cheeses on all airlines are served way too cold to be lovely and gooey - perhaps
the smell might put others off. The port was excellent as one would expect.
The pinnacle of the meal was the Vanilla panna cotta which was absolutely wonderful
especially when sampled with the Sauternes. Service was perfect except that
they thought it was my birthday but they were three days late - but I am not
going to deduct points for that!

Meal type: Lunch 'All Day Deli' - A cheese and tomato sandwich.
A sponge cake with some red-berry style substance. A strawberry mousse.
Drink: Chosen by me: A Virgin Mary and a Black Coffee.
Comments: "A squidgy baguette, with no bread/spread or
taste, with 2 slices of mozzarella and 2 slices of tomato - I was hungry but
only managed a bite. The sponge cake thing was utter filth. The strawberry mousse
was quite tasty, but rather cheap in style - think back to a 10year olds' mousse.
What surprised me is they managed to outdo the outward leg of the journey by
actually offering me a choice of rancid sandwiches. How they come up with these
meals is utterly beyond me. A monkey could make something
tastier. "All Day Deli" - I want to know who owns this so called deli...I
wouldn't feed it to my dog, if I had one - and it would probably turn it's nose
up at it anyway. Good leg room, crying shame about the food. Sort it out.
