MEAL OF THE WEEK - 5 NOV 2006

Route: NRT - LHR, 31 Aug 2006
Ticket price: Too much!
Flight duration: 12h 00m
Class: business
Aircraft: B747-400
Meal: Lunch/Light Meal - Lunch Starter: Peppered salmon w/ inaniwa noodles
and yuzu dressing. Main course: Caesar salad with chickin (cold)
Light Meal Starter: King prwans with a mango and coriander salsa. Main
course: Four cheese ravioli and roast vegetables in a creamy Parmesan
cheese and basil sauce.
Drink: Buck's Fizz
Comments: Nothing exciting about the meal offerings. BA serves a "bag" of
cashew nuts with drinks prior to the meal. BA seems to have focused on
the comfort aspect of the flight with their innovative seats and not
so much on the meals. The annoying high pitched voice of the Japanese
cabin crew working upstairs had an attitude worth remembering. She'd
never get hired by a Japanese airline. Overall, a comfortable but not
so memorable flight.

Ticket price: US$2,400 r/t
Flight duration: 7h 45m

Aircraft: B747-436 G-BYGB
Meal: Dinner - Starters: Fresh green leaf salad with shaved carrots,
accompanied with a lime olive oil dressing, followed by prawn and shrimp
cocktail. Main course was lamb roghan josh (mutton curry) with browned
rice and leafy spinach. Dessert was a selection of cheese and oatcakes.
Drink: Pikes Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2005 (Australian)
Comments: Excellent catering out of London. The starters were fresh indeed.
The bread selection on BA is excellent. The lime olive oil dressing was
perfect with subtle but enough citrus in it. The main course needed salt
and some spice, but it was good all the same. The cheese selection was
typically British and great too. BA service is tops, especially the Indian
crew who were smiley and warm all through.

Meal: Light meal - Fresh seasonal salad, followed by "Indian vegetarian
dish of palak paneer (cottage cheese cubes with spinach), aloo mutter
capsicum masala (peas potato masala), jeera pulao (cumin seed rice)." Dessert
was "Vineet Bhatia's chilled rice pudding infused with white chocolate
and roast coconut."
Drink: Heidsiek Monopole Blue Top Brut Reserve Champagne
Comments: Extremely bad meal in terms of taste, presentation, and quality.
I believe BA has got this meal terribly wrong. A full lunch should have
been served or this light meal should have been more quantitative. The
salad was so limp and dry, it wouldn't have passed any quality test.
The Indian option was tasteless, saltless, spiceless. Bad. It was like
a punishment. The other options were worse. The dessert I didn't try.
BA should swap their meals, and serve a light breakfast and a full lunch.
Or they should serve two full meals. There was no cheese option either.
The wines on their list weren't loaded. The catering was by Oberoi Flight
services. They should be penalised and removed as caterers. Shame on
them.

Meal: Breakfast - To start with: Fresh fruit, Croissant, Rice Krispies
with cold milk, butter, jam. The Main course was a "Full English
breakfast of scrambled eggs, grilled bacon, pork sausage, mushrooms,
tomoatoes and hash brown potatoes." Camomile tea.
Drink: Orange juice
Comments: 0815 flight out Delhi. Poor breakfast, great service. I asked
for cereal (off the menu), and they brought me one from first class.
The croissant was too dry by overheating. The English breakfast too was
overly dried by excessive heating. The best part of the meal was the
cereal and herbal tea. Very disappointing indeed.

Meal: Vegetarian - The vegetarian Meal pasta tasted like ham or something
like pork, they insisted it was vegetarian, it had a distinctive odor
that reminded me of ham that had spoiled. This was the worse airline
meal ever British Airways should really try harder. After landing in
London the meal gave me really bad diarrhea the worse part was they lost
my baggage and I had to stay at the Hotel next to the toilet for the
next 3 days, Ive never been this sick before. They must have slipped
some spoiled meat in the meal, they insisted it was vegetarian.
Drink: Wine

Route: JFK - LHR, 23 Mar 2006
Ticket price: n/a
Flight duration: 6h 30m
Class: business
Aircraft: 747-400
Meal: BA's "Sleeper Service" Nightcap Snack and Breakfast -
Nightcap cocktail after takeoff: Champagne cocktail and macadamia nuts
Nightcap snack after takeoff: A simple green salad with olive oil dressing
and an olive bread sandwich (room temperature) filled with creamed spinach,
leeks and cheese. On the tray, we were also provided two chocolates in
a small box.
Pre-arrival breakfast consisted of: Coffee, a bowl of mixed fruit and
a croissant.
While this onboard offering is a bit simple and uncreative for international
business class, we must admit the pre-flight supper (self-serve buffet)
in the departure lounge was very appealing and consisted of choices such
as sea bass, roast turkey, pasta, stir fry, cheeses, vegetables, etc.,
so it made up for the onboard simplicity offered by a very indifferent
BA cabin crew (Example: I was offered a glass of water after boarding
by the attendant on my aisle, while my travel companion was offered a
glass of champagne by a different member of the cabin crew on his side
of the aisle -- in business class!).
Drink: Champagne cocktail as a nightcap and coffee for breakfast
Comments: On late evening departures from JFK, BA offers "Sleeper
Service" in Club World Business Class. You are offered pre-flight
supper in BA's Club World Departure Lounge at JFK and a buffet breakfast
in BA's Arivals Lounge at LHR upon arrival. This concept is designed to
allow you maximum sleep onboard; however, you must assume responsibility
for arriving early at JFK to enjoy the pre-flight supper or staying after
your flight for if you desire a heartier breakfast in the LHR arrivals
lounge.

The passenger next to me didn't want her sandwich and offered it to me,
so I gladly accepted the second serving. The fruit, though packaged, tasted
very fresh. I didn't try the sultana and chewy cake because I was already
pretty full from a day of eating, so I simply put it away and saved it

Comments: The chicken masala tasted very authentic and similar to what
I ate while living in India. All it needed was a roti to complete the
effect. The pie was absolutely wonderful and not enough good words can
be said about it!
My brother had the braised beef option, which he said was also good, but
he did not want to take a photo of it when I asked him to. Interestingly
enough, the same two options were also offered when I flew from London

Comments: The chicken quiche was interesting...it was kind of salty chicken
chunks held together with egg and mushy asparagus. The sandwiches were
fine and the scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam were very good.
The lemon meringue pie, however, was inedible...the lemon curd filling
was average but the meringue smelled of raw egg whites and was gritty
with undesolved sugar. The flight was meant to be 2 hours and 5 minutes,

complemented it perfectly

Meal: Main course - Grilled chicken served with butter sauce, cooked fennel,
tomato and other unidentified green :-)
Drink: Water, rest of champagne
Comments: I did not switch to wine, because I felt not very active after
too many glasses of champagne. The sad it is, I had to drink water...
But the wines are very special. They have a unique collection of fine
wines, specially chosen for Concorde, from some of the finest vineyards
in the classic regions of Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne. These wines
have been purchased, sometimes several years in advance, and cellared
until ready to drink.

Warm Bread Roll
Cheese and Biscuits
Grapes
Salad with Sun dried tomatoes and lemon dressing
Plum Pie and cream
2 Chocolates
Beef Steak, carrots, asparagus and dumpling thing
Drink: Water and Tea
Comments: Well this isn't the normal service, as it was during the food, meal, catering
strike, but this was still very tasty. Although everything was smaller
meal-wise for this flight, the quality was still good. The steak was very
nice, bit more gravy/sauce would have topped it off! The carrots and the
asparagus were hard, but the rest was OK. BA really made up for not serving
anything on the flight out!!

Choice of rolls (not pictured) cheese, crackers and grapes. Dessert of
two choclates. The drinks came with weird breadsticks.
Drink: Diet Coke with Lemon, Red Wine (not pictured)
Comments: This casserole was...interesting. It had this awful feature
where the first bite was tasty, the second half as much as the first and
by the sixth bite, you didn't want to eat any more. However, the presentation
and quality of the sides were outstanding for a two hour flight.

1: Breakfast: Some fruits (not fresh) croissant and bread with butter

2: Lunch: Lamb massala with vegetables and rice. Green salad, bread and
some cake as a dessert and yes there was a chocolate too.
Comments: A good rating as food was Muslim food instead of just vegetarian
food. Quality of food was great and I did not felt that it is an ordinary
airline food. Quantity of food was quite small and our flight time was
extended to nearly 14 hours due to weather but this food was not enough
even for 10-11 hours flight.

1. Pre lunch drinks: Potato snacks with drinks
2. Lunch: Salad with goat cheese, Lamb tikka masala with Nan (flat bread)
and rice. Dessert made of some cream. Dinner roll, cheese and butter also
accompanied the lunch.
3. Dinner/snack: Croissant with turkey and backed vegetables with dinner
roll and butter. Some sort of cake as dessert.
Drink: Ginger Ale
Comments: Excellent rating because Muslim food was actually Muslim food
and not just vegetarian meal.
Lunch: Excellent salad and I must admit that I have not consumed such
a delicious and fresh salad on Economy class for a while. Tikka masala
with Nan and rice was also excellent and dessert was superb.
Dinner: Croissant sandwich was quite delicious while dessert was just
OK.
Overall food was excellent in taste and was a bit different than normal

Drink: Water, Tea
Comments: Simply Disgusting! I will never understand how an airline that
has the most innovative, fresh and delicious snacks on its European routes
can serve such a disgusting snack on a long-haul flight. Insubstantial
and cheaply presented almost like school lunch bag. The sandwich
was absolutely tasteless and remained so even after I sprinkled all the
salt and pepper provided on it. The cake was tiny, dry and tasteless.
The only saving grace was the tea which is always a delight on BA. 2/10
would have been 1 without the tea!

Meal: Lunch, Afternoon Tea - garden salad with mozarella balls and green
pesto; coice of chicken stew or beef lasagna; bread roll & butter
chocolate cake with rhapsberry-sauce; candy bar
Drink: Gin & Tonic, Water, White wine
Comments: Pre dinner Drink: full bar offered; had a classic gin &
tonic which was served with a packed snack.
After the bar service crew came throgh with a choice of wines; opted for
the white one - Zinfandel - which was a good choice: fruity and crisp.
A second round of wine was offered when the meals was served.
I really like BA's main meals. Nice presentation and good quality. Salad
was fresh, Main was hot and rich in flavor and the cake was sinnfully
good. A nice meal all in all, yet a little too heavy on the stomach.
Crew was nice and attentive as well. IFE is the best you can get across
the Atlantic with excellent programming, big personal screens and good
headsets. BA also still offers comprehensive an high quality amenity kits.
The only downside is the seating. Seats were horrible. Old wobbly, and
cramped. After 2 hours I started getting cramps in my legs.

Starter:Pate with figs.
Main:Chicken with cheese tortellin in tomatoe sauce
Dessert:White Chocolate mousse with rasberry sauce
Brie and Mature Chedder cheeses with crackers, breadroll
Drink: G&T, Sauvignon Blanc, tea, water
Comments: I booked very late and BA was actually cheaper than Easyjet.
For £25 I was able to upgrade the return leg of my trip to business
and I'm glad I did! As well as lounge access I had more space on a full
flight than I would of in the main cabin. Plus a great meal!!
I got to try pate which I've never really liked before, but I really really
liked this! I could of had another plate full. It was crumbly but it had
like butter underneath it. Gorgeous taste! The tray came with the starter
there and the dessert and cheeses as well. The person sitting next to
me finished his dessert before his main course, but what the heck, you
can do what you want I guess! My main meal was the Chicken with cheese
tortellin. The other option was King Prawns with sweet and sour noodles.
I had a hankering for pasta though and I think the FA was happy as they
were low on prawns! However, the chicken was very good. Nice sixe chunks
of chicken mixed in a good sause and perfectly cooked pasta.
The white chocolate mouse was an oral sensation on the taste buds. The
rich creamy flavour of the light and fluffy mousse was brought to a head
by the chocolate layer and the rasberry sause just oozed just enough contrast
to bring you down to earth (well, back to 35000ft anyway!).
Even the cheese was a delight. The soft and creamy brie spread on the
crackers like a white sticky honey. The long, strong and hard piece of
cheddar was a savoury bite that rounded of the meal superbly, particulalry
when washed down with the white sav.blanc recommeded by the FA.
A very tasty and satisfying meal!

This is a fairly short "long haul" flight for BA, and I was
amazed to be offered a choice of three hot meals - salmon, chicken or
parsley risotto. I went for the parsley and my colleague went for the
salmon. Both were superb.
Prawn and pasta salad that accompanied it was overcooked, and the ingrediants
were soggy. Washed down with lots of french white wine. Service was excellent
Rating 1-10 (worst-best): 7 for the food, 10 for the service

contents of the meal:
Picture 1: starter of prawn and crab cocktail, fresh seasonal salad with
balsamic vinegar and olive oil dressing, olive roll and bread (from basket
with several warm choices), cola as drink.

blackcurrant herbal tea, box of gourmet chocolates.

warm fruit scones, Cornish clotted cream, strawberry preserves, "chocolate
and raspberry cream" sweet, and hot tea.
comments: I didn't take a picture of the main (fisherman's pie) on this
flight. There were 3 other choices of a grilled fillet of beef, a cheese
ravioli, or a "sticky chicken and noodle salad".
rating: 7 overall. cheeses were the best part of the meal service.

comments: A very enjoyable brunch by a friendly and personable crew after
waiting 90 minutes on the aircraft for de-icing and re-de-icing! We had
to spend the night in the airport (Newark) the previous night due to heavy
snow, and there was no way to leave the airport (no taxis or other transport
available)! The fruit plate was done especially well with an excellent
presentation.
