Route: Hong Kong (HKG) - Sydney (SYD), 18 Jan 2004
Ticket price: SYD-HKG-PVG and v v. - $2100 Australian
Flight duration: 8 hours and 20 minutes
Aircraft type & class: A330-300, Economy
Business or leisure trip: Leisure
Meal type: Breakfast
Contents of the meal: Seasonal Fruits (Watermelon and Rockmelon), Assorted
Bread and Rolls (Croissant, Custard Danish and Chocolate Muffin) with
Strawberry Preserve and Butter, Blueberry Yoghurt
Drink: Apple Juice and Tea
Comments: I apologise for the quality of the photo -
the passenger in front of me had their seat inclined >:o(. A menu was
provided for this sector (as opposed to my flight to Hong Kong), but strangely
enough there was no choice for breakfast - I was half-expecting an Asian
breakfast option. I guess with three mains for dinner, something had to
give. The bread was a bit too oily or sweet for my taste, but it did the
job. I never knew that watermelon and rockmelon were seasonally winter
fruits (maybe that is me just being ignorant) but I appreciate having
the fruit there. CX has good presentation even for the economy meals,
a more than adequate brekkie

Comments: I apologise for the quality of the photo -
the passenger in front of me had their seat inclined >:o(. CX food
for ex-HKG flights is very good quality, well at least my choice more
than satisfied me. A menu was provided for this sector (as opposed to
my flight to Hong Kong) and three mains were available. The salad was
a good compliment to the light yet flavoursome pasta. The cheesecake equally
did not disappoint.

Ticket price: (SYD-HKG-PVG and v v/.) $2100 Australian
Flight duration: 9 hours
Aircraft type & class: A330-300, Economy
Business or leisure trip: Leisure
Meal type: Lunch
Contents of the meal: Parma Ham with Rockmelon and Olives, Beef Stew with
Mashed Potato, Carrots and Beans, Bread, Christmas Chocolate Cake
Drink: Lemonade
Comments: No menus were provided during this flight.
I particularly like the trays that CX use for their meals. The beef stew
was quite bland and the meal quality is reminiscent of the somewhat inferior
meals IMHO served on Qantas (not surprising, since it's the same caterer
as far as flights ex. Sydney are concerned). Christmas cake a nice touch
for the festive season BUT the Santa Claus decoration isn't edible...
potential choke risks and passengers weren't informed of this! IMHO somewhat
below par to CX standard. There was an alternative choice to the beef
stew, but I can't remember what it was :o(

I particularly like the trays that CX use for their meals. The noodles
were quite bland, but otherwise were well cooked. An adequate breakfast.
There was another choice for egg omelette and sausages as an alternative
to the beef noodles.

Route: HKG - NRT, date: 13 JAN 2004
Ticket price: US$2,000 + r/t
Flight duration: 3'30"
Aircraft type & class: B777-300 2-class
Business or leisure trip: Business
Meal type: Snack at the lounge and Dinner onboard
Contents of the meal:
** Lounge: CX has two beautiful lounges in HKG. Both lounges have
the "Noodle Bar" serving western style snacks and asian noodles.
I opted for the Won Ton Noodle soup with steamed char sui bun. Very tasty!
** Onboard: (from the menu) Selected Seasonal Salad w/balsamic vinegar
dressing. Appet: Mugwart Soba Noodles, Chicken & Mackerel Tataki.
Main: Steamed Seabass adn Grilled Scallop w/Sea Urchin Sauche. Bamboo
rice and Mixed vegetables (Japanese style)
Drink: Cathay Signature drink: Pacific Sunrise - a refreshing
combination of champagne and Drambuie w/ the zest of orange and lemon.
(The strips of orange and yellow in the drink are orange and lemon peals)
Comments: Cathay's cart services in J class is nicely
presented. The signature drink was a bit too sweet for me but a creative
drink. The salad greens were exceptionally crisp, noodles did NOT stick
to each other as often experienced on other airlines and the main course
was delicious.
Rating 1-10 (worst-best): 9+ The only point deduction
is that it took nearly 30 minutes before drinks were served after take-off.
May have something to do with setting up the carts for the drink serivce

Route: CX 904 Manila to Hong Kong, 20 Dec 2003
Flight duration: 1 1/2hrs
Class: Economy
Meal Type: Breakfast
Content: Corned beef and diced potatoes on pan de sal
(a local type of bread, popular for breakfast). Note that in the Philippines
corned beef is more like shredded meat that comes in can rather than the
thick slabs found in delis in North America.
Drink: Coke, but juice, coffee and tea available as well
Comments: Actually it was not disappointing at all. It
was good and satisfying for a short flight. But my travel companion who
doesn't eat beef had to request for something else. She was given a cheese
and tomato sandwich on rye, presumably from either business or first class.
