Route: Atlanta (ATL) to London Gatwick (LGW), 2 Nov 2003
Ticket price: £2,000 (return)
Flight duration: 7 hours
Aircraft type & class: 777, Business Elite
Business or leisure trip: Leisure
Meal type: Dinner
Warm nut selection
Prosciutto with Figs & Arugula leaves
Salad with Blue Cheese dressing
Lamb short rib with rosemary sauce, pearl couscous and veggies
Drink: Champagne, Diet Coke
Amber's Paddock, Sauvignon Blanc, 2002, Marlborough, New Zealand Raimat
Cab Sav, Penedes, Spain
Comments: Prosciutto had been sitting out for many hours
so it had dried out. Tasted OK though, but nowhere near as good as the
similar starter out of Gatwick a couple of days before. Salad OK with
dressing. Lamb had been cooked to death. Couscous wasn't bad, but I much
prefer something tastier like simple potato thank you. This was a night
flight and they were extraordinarily slow serving. I fell asleep before
I could hit cheese & dessert and had one of the best night's sleep
I've ever had on a flight, despite the really annoying PA announcement
two hours before landing that breakfast was to be served. I fell asleep
again and woke up 20 minutes before landing, missing breakfast - good
job based on previous experiences of DL breakfast. This is surprising
because the seats on DL are not that comfortable - I think I must've been
recovering for the previous two days' excesses in Vegas.
Rating 1-10 (worst-best): 5 for food, 9 for sleep

Appetizer:
Smoked Salmon, Gravlax and Pecan-smoked
Trout, presented with Jumbo Lump Crabmeat and a Cucumber, Red Bell Pepper
and Caper Salad.
Salad:
Baby Spinach and Napa Cabbage
with julienned Carrots, Shittake and Enoki Mushrooms and Sesame Seeds,
offered with creamy Cilantro Dressing or creamy Asian-style Dressing,
with assorted breads and butter
Entree:
Herb roasted Breast of Chicken
with Porcini Mushroon Sauce, accompanied by a Polenta Cake, Swiss Chard,
and julienned Roma Tomato.
My mom had the Beef Short Rib accented by Hoisin Sauce, served with Sesame
Rice and a medley of Bok Choy, Red Onion, and julienned Red and Yellow
Bell Peppers.
Cheese:
Cheddar, Smoked Gouda, and Emmenthal
(AKA Swiss) cheeses with water biscuits (AKA crackers).
Dessert:
Breyers All Natural Vanilla
Ice Cream Sundae with choice of Chocolate, Caramel, and Raspberry sauces,
Whipped Cream and chopped Nuts, garnished with a Pirouline Cookie
Breakfast:
Fresh Fruit, Croissant with
Butter, Omelet with Gruyere Cheese and Fresh Dill accompanied by roaster
Potatoes and Chicken Apple Sausage
Drink: They had two featured whites, and two featured
reds. The white wine we had with the starter was the Chateau l'Etoile,
Graves Bordeaux white. It was marginally better than the other choice,
the Hooting Owl Chardonnay from Languedoc, France. As for the reds, the
choices were Chateau Gigognan, Chateauneuf-Du-Pape from the Rhone region
of France, and the Palazzo Del Principe Cabernet Sauvignon from Veneto,
Italy. Both my mom and I agreed that the Palazzo del Principe was much
better than the Chateau Gigognan. For the cheese and dessert, I was given
a glass of port (not told what kind it was) and Courvosier VS (which goes
great with ice cream).
Comments: First off, I apologise for the quality of these pictures,
as I got a disposable digital camera for this trip and it turned out you
couldn't even verify the quality of your pictures when you took them.
Next time I'll just spring for a real digital camera. Anyway, on to the
food: The starter and salad were served at the same time, and were pretty
good together and with the featured white wine. I picked the herb roasted
chicken w/porcini mushrooms and polenta because the menu mentioned that
it was a special for this flight, being bound for Italy. However, the
chicken was way too dry and obviously overcooked. The sides were pretty
good, but the horrible quality of the chicken dragged down the overall
quality of the entree. In contrast, the beef short rib my mom had was
"melt in your mouth" tender, and way better than my choice.
The red wine we had was a good choice with both entrees, although more
so with the beef short rib. But, my mom complained that the hoisin sauce
was too sweet (she's used to the real Chinese sauces, which aren't sweet
at all. This sauce had the sweetness of an American barbecue sauce, which
was fine by me, but not her)
The cheese and ice cream were served at the same
time, whereas the last time I flew Delta's BusinessElite transatlantic,
they served the cheese before the dessert, which is what I prefer. The
cheese itself was good, but I would have preferred a more exotic selection,
like some form of blue cheese (Roquefort, Gorgonzola, Stilton). I prefer
a full bodied red with cheese instead of port, so I drank the Italian
cabernet with the cheese. Like many dessert lovers will attest to, the
ice cream was the best part of the meal. The presentation was great as
well, as they asked you whatever sauces, or toppings you wanted on it,
and the cookie was a nice plus. Service was great as well, the FAs were
always on hand, and we were promptly served. They even gave me an extra
ice cream when service was finished. If this service was at a US restaurant,
I would not hesitate tipping 20%. I tried the port after the meal, and
it was pretty good as well.
Breakfast was served about an hour before landing,
and it was pretty good. Everything went well together, the only problem
was that I was still full and a little hung over from dinner!

Meal Type: Dinner
Baked ziti with cheese and tomato sauce, salad with carrots and raisins,
herbed dinner roll, balsamic salad dressing, butter, and tangerine vanilla
cake. I chose a Coke for my beverage.
Comments: This dinner was very tasty and satisfying.
It was served using Delta's current standard tray which has a neat and
uniformed presentation. Delta had a beverage service with pretzels after
the movie (not shown). I enjoyed the meal and the flight. Keep it up Delta.

Pretzels and lemonade
Comments: This is an example of what Delta calls their
fast break service for short haul flights. Besides the pretzels, you have
a choice of beverage: Cran apple juice, lemonade or water. I chose the
lemonade for this flight. Perfect for such a short flight.
GO DELTA.

quite tasty and fresh tasting. GO DELTA for actually still serving a full
meal. They also had a beverage service with pretzels (not shown) just
before landing. Great flight
