Drink: French white wine, coffee, drambuie
Comments: This menu was almost identical to the dinner that I had a week before ewhen flying from SIN - AKL. Overall, it was good and I enjoyed it. I noticed that SQ didn't do a beverage cart service before this meal... maybe because it was Supper they want to get the meal over quickly to let most pax sleep. It was good to see the little slip of paper explaining why they had to use plastic cutlery instead of metal...

Flight duration: approx 10 hours
Aircraft type & class: B747-400 'Megatop', Y Class

Meal type: Dinner (2nd meal service of flight)

(quote from Menu)
Appetiser = Gravadlax with potato and gherkin and grain mustard sauce.

Main Course = Ravioli in herb pesto with parmesan cheese

Cheese & crackers / kiwifruit cheesecake / roll & butter

Drink: French red wine; Hunters 99 Pinot Noir, Marlborough; packaged mineral water; coffee
Comments: On this return trip from LHR - SIN - AKL, I flew a total of 4 long flights with SQ and this flight was the best of them all!
Why? The food was excellent but more importantly, the cabin crew were superb. They were pleasant, attentive and friendly. I guess that as this flight wasn't 100% full, they had more time for all passengers. Adeline, who was the stewardess looking after my side of the cabin was really good and looked after me very well.
Back to the food... Appetiser and main were both good. I decided to break a habit of a lifetime and choose the non meat option and was surprised by how tasty the ravioli was... The kiwifruit cheesecake for dessert was fab. Light with a ever so slight sharpness and just what you need after a rich main course. Why can't other airlines serve desserts like this? ( I get indigestion when I remember the very heavy brownie that LH have in C-class for USA to Germany flights).
We were lucky with the wine for this meal. The stewardess said that they had run out of the - in my opinion, rough - Y-class French red wine and she was offering a 1999 Hunters Pinot Noir (I think she said this was the First Class wine). I had no hesitation in asking for my glass to be re-filled!
I very rarely give a score of 10 because, in my opinion, Y-class Airline food - no matter how well done - is never anything to get too excited about. However, for this flight, I think that the combination of good crew, good food and drink might even deserve this.

Appetiser = Tomato salad with bocconcini cheese (Honey-lime dressing)

Main Course = Seared lam with onion relish, ratatouille and garlic mashed potatoes

Ice cream / roll and butter

Drink: Bloody Mary (with nuts) ; Unknown French red wine; packaged mineral water; coffee
Comments: The pre-meal bloody mary was perfectly mixed (so much so that I suspect SQ use a ready prepared bloody mary mix...?) and had a nice 'kick'. I appreciate it when the cabin crew are generous with the Absolut. :-)
Also, from a presentation point of view, a nice start to the meal... the blue Raffles Class cocktail stirrer contrasted nicely with the tomato colour.
The salad wasn't anything fancy but the Honey and Lime dressing did add a nice subtle 'zing'.
The star of this meal was the lamb. We were flying from NZ and the choice of main course was 'Fish' or 'Lamb'. Easy choice for me because NZ lamb is good quality... (OK...maybe only Welsh lamb is better). Anyway, I think that most of the other pax - very sensibly - went for lamb because the stewardess told me that they were running low on the lamb.
When I peeled the foil off my dish, I thought that the lamb had been horribly over-cooked and was going to be dry. Well, I was wrong... it turned out to be tender and fairly juicy. It might have been over-cooked by a few minutes but wasn't at all dry... Let's face it, have you ever had perfect Y-class meat? I prefer my meat rare but I doubt if any airline would serve me a bloody inside sirloin steak in Y-class. Garlic mash had good strong flavour - perfect for eating at 30,000+ feet.... I could have done with more mash to soak up the rich sauce....
Once again, faultless Singapore Airlines service on this flight.... how will I ever bring myself to fly in economy class on another airline again??

Comments: Although this wasn't a full size meal tray (only about two thirds of the full size) , it was another very satisfying meal. SQ certainly know how to fill their passengers up! The Y-class service was again, impeccable...
The noodle dish wasn't at all greasy and filled me up nicely. Presentation was nice as the dish was topped with a few pieces of red chilli. In the end, I couldn't finish the meal and had to leave the muffin. It was nice to get a piece of papaya with the fruits. The papaya was so soft and sweet and I would have preferred a few more pieces!
Nice to see some shiny metal cutlery with this meal (unfortunately, flights between SIN and the UK use plastic cutlery). The spoon is so shiny and you can see the reflection of the windows in it.

Comments: This wasn't an official meal service from SQ. I guess, I can call it a 'self assembled' snack. I couldn't sleep during the flight and asked the stewardess for a beer. She kindly gave me a beer with an apple. As I was enjoying the beer, I noticed that dawn was breaking and we were crossing the state border from South Australia into Victoria. It was a lovely sun-rise - if I had slept, I would have been unable to witness it.

Appetiser = 'Fai Cai Yu Sheng', Prosperity New Year Salad with salmon to usher in the "Year of the Monkey".

Main Course = 'Nian Nian You Yu', Fillet of fish in Oriental golden mushroom sauce with deluxe vegetables and fried rice

Cheese & crackers / Ice cream / roll & butter

Drink: French white wine, coffee, drambuie
Comments: I guess that I was lucky to be travelling over the Chinese lunar new year period because SQ had laid on a special menu for Chinese New Year. The starter was a raw fish dish that is popular in Singapore for this festive season. Apparently, tossing the salad (and I presume, eating it) is meant to bring forth good luck. Unfortunately, I was unable to find lots of vegetables in my Prosperity salad but no raw salmon... :-(
Even without the raw salmon, the salad was delicious and it came with a small carton of dressing which gave it a sweet flavour and a hint of citrus fruit.
I am unsure of the origins or meaning of the main course but it was steaming hot and tasty. The fried rice was moist, fish wasn't overcooked and soft. The vegetables were interesting as they were prepared with some little black/brown ingredients which resembled worms. I am still puzzled by this ingredient hence the close-up shot. The Chinese mushrooms were juicy but I could only find 2 in my dish... Overall, a very appetising main dish.

Ice cream, Cheese and the other components of the meal were good.

I can't remember what wine was served but it was a french chardonnay that went down nicely with the fish.
I notice that SQ have stopped offering digestifs after the meal... they do serve you on request and I asked for a drambuie. not sure what the reason behind this is...

Fruit Appetiser
Cereal with fresh milk
Main Course = Braised Egg Noodles with minced chicken in oriental sauce and vegetables. (with green chilli and SQ 'Kris Chilli' sauce)
Roll & butter & fruit preserve
Drink: OJ, coffee
Comments: The cereal was one of these pre-packaged things that had fresh milk included. I don't like raisins so had to pick out all the raisins from the cereal. Luckily, there were only about 6!! The main course was a hot noodle dish. The menu said that SQ have 'Kris Chilli', which is a chilli sauce made to an original SQ recipe... so I tried that. There was also a small container with green chilli and I sprinkled that on the dish... Wow...!! I think that I under-estimated the power of the 'Kris Chilli' and for a few moments, my mouth was on fire! It was a good feeling though...
I think that on the flight in from SIN to LHR, a young child was sat in my seat. You might be able to see the picture with the coffee cup where the child had scribbled on the tray table with colour crayons and the LHR cleaning staff didn't remove the mess from the tray table. I'm not impressed with the standard of the LHR cleaners. :-(

Main Course = Braised chicken in mustard vinegar sauce with green beans and celeriac potato puree (exclusively created by Gordon Ramsey)

-and- Stirfried beef and vegetables in Oriental black pepper sauce with steamed rice

Cheese & crackers / Ice cream / roll & butter

Drink: Tiger Beer, French white wine,
Comments: This was my first flight with SQ in about 2 and a half years. During this time, I've been flying Y-class with all the other Star Alliance members... UA / AC / LH / OS / BD / NH.... What a difference SQ makes. Their Y-class food standards are well above all the others. Only All Nippon Airlines comes closest to the SQ standard.
Service was again superb. A nice touch is that the pre-meal hot-towel service uses proper thick cotton face clothes. That makes such a nice difference.
Appetiser was nothing special but main course(s) was excellent. I had the Gordon Ramsey chicken first. I think this was my first piece of airline chicken that was not overcooked - it was moist, succulent and full of flavour. SQ are one of the few airlines who use a proper china casserole dish for Y-class main meals. Most other airlines use plastic or foil dishes. I also tried the chinese style beef dish and that was delicious too.
The British Ice Cream was far too sweet but I finished it...
Coffee was also good. (I don't think SQ use instant coffee in Y-class)
Overall, well done SQ, a refreshing and tasty change from other European and US airlines.
