MEAL OF THE WEEK *** 7 JANUARY 2007
Photo taken by: James Barclay
Route and date: BKK-HKG, July 2006
Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes
Aircraft: 747-400
Class: First
Meal: Dinner
Contents: Please see individual pictures
Comments: Thai Airways has excellent service in their first class. The
flight attendants were very warm and friendly and made us feel quite
comfortable for this short flight! The meal service was done at a nice
pace and there were only 5 of us in the cabin. Their newer place settings
are very attractive and are very different from those of other airlines,
as you can see. The F lounge at BKK was beautifully decorated with several
hot and cold food offerings.

Contents of the meal: Salad: shrimp salad; Entree: Pork in butter cream
with broccoli and Potatoes; Desert: something resembling tiramisu.
Drink: Both red and white wine. After meal Camus Whiskey was also offered.
Comments: For a relatively short flight, this is quite a meal. THAI again
has done a good job. Ther other entree I did not choose is oriental style
seafood with rice, which looks also tasty.

Flight duration: 10 hours
Aircraft type & class: 747 & Economy Class
Business or leisure trip: Leisure
Meal type: Breakfast
Contents of the meal: Fruit slad in passion fruit sauce, fruit yoghurt;
Entree - Gruyere and Emmenthal cheese quiche, Nurenberger sausage, vegetable
nugget, baked tomato half with oregano and olive oil; and a croissant.
Drink: Coffee
Comments: Most in-flight quiches taste soggy but this one is quite decent;
the sausage is okay; however, the "vegetable nugget" (the one
at the upper right-handed corner) is really good. The tomato also tastes
great with with just right amount of olive oil. Again, THAI did a good
job to make my Eurotrip have a great start.

Comments: With so many other airlines "downgrading" their in-flight
meals, this is one of the best economy class meal I had in the past few
years. The green curry entree is especially tasty. Even the appetizer
and desert tasted better than most other airlines.

Drink: Tea/Coffee/Booze/A1-Jet Fuel/Anything from the cart
Comments: ...well, I think that's what I got, they dimmed the lights
(why???) to twilight levels while we where eating - my applogies for
the quality of the photos in the low light. We had left Bangkok at
midnight - so it was a bit odd to get this (somewhat), big meal only
one hour into the flight before they tried to get us to sleep. The
duck I chose had 2 chillis - "Medium hot" printed on the menu
next to
the name - it was far, far, far from being spicy at all; I suspect it
was written there for the pasty, Australian people on the flight (hey,
they means me, doesn't it?), who all chose the western mean anyway.
Duck wasn't bad... the bread roll was nothing compared to the one from
FUK-BKK flight, but as usual the portion was a bit lacking. This
flight, to/fro MEL-BKK is always CRAZY and cramed to the overheads in
a very worn and soiled looking MD11... but I'm only here to review the
food. =)~

Drink: Tea/Coffee/yadda, yadda
Comments: Sounds like a lot of food, huh? But, as you can see from
the picts - it turned out to be a major dissapointment - the food turned
out to be even smaller in size and worse then the (usally taken with
pintch of salt), superlative description in the menu gave. The
crossant was okay, the quiche was unsual for breakfast but okay - the
"brick" of potato (on the right of the main dish), was just wrong
for
all the wrong reasons - for a start it was COLD! Yikes!!! ...the
chicken was the small (!) blob in the centre. Oh boy.
Rating 1-10 (worst-best): 5 - my last meal of this trip and I was fed

Drink: Singha (Thai) beer
Comments: Well, it was a pre meal snack, honestly most airlines can't
really screw this up... Jeez, it's a pre-pack of nuts and a can of
drink - hence no rating. As a rule I always try the "local" beer
on a
national airline... Singha beer's okay, but it's thick and heavy in
the belly - like Victoria Bitter beer back in Australia.
Rating 1-10 (worst-best): n/a - there's really not much to rate in this
case.

Contents of the meal: Chicken and... (see comments)
Drink: (still nursing my) Singha (Thai) beer
Comments: I didn't get a menu on this leg, all I got was the standard
"Chicken or beef sir?" from the cabin member... so I got the chicken.
The chicken was actually quite tasty and moist, in some kind of tangy
sauce. Came with rice (with some faux Japanese "furikake" on top),
carrots, snow peas, some kind of small salad, some sweet chocolate
cake and a *very* fresh and tasty bread roll and butter. The bread
roll was fresh from a bakery shop in Fukuoka - I saw the cabin crew
member pulling them out of a carry bag with the writing of the shop in
the side while he was in the galley. I have a feeling it wasn't a
usual thing on this flight, however. Portion of the meal was small -
about what you get in Y class these days.
Rating 5 -> the bread roll brings it up to 7.
