Flying from: Toyko NRT to Chicago ORD, 13 November 2002
Class: Economy
Meal type: Main course -
Smoked cod sushi, garden fresh salad with dressing of the day, chicken teriyaki with steamed rice, shirataki noodles, vegetables and shiitake mushrooms and dessert cake
Drink: Wine, coffee
Comments: "This was the second leg of the return flight from Singapore to Chicago and on to Detroit. I like the fact that the choice of meal reflected the country of departure. Again there was plenty and a variety. It was balanced and hot. I would be hard pressed to want any better. It was nice to see wine served in individual bottles instead of being poured from one large bottle. The flight crew were excellent. There was a medical emergency during the flight and it was handled in a professional, expedient and caring manner. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the crews of UA #881 and 882."

Meal type: Main course - Lor mai kai- chicken, mushrooms, chestnuts and glutinous rice, fresh fruit and roll and pastry
Drink: Orange juice and coffee
Comments: "This meal was balanced, hot and sufficient in quantity. It was served shortly after take off which was good given the fact that this is an early flight. The flight crew were certainly helpful and warm at the same time as being professional."

Flying from: Houston Bush Intercontinental IAH to Denver DEN, October 2002
Class: First
Meal type: Dinner
Drink: Dewars on the rocks, yet more Chilean red wine and water
Comments: "Cheese ravioli (two big round ones with black and green stripes and stuffed with ricotta and maybe artichoke bits), which was served with red
sauce with black and green olives, a small salad (sliced green peppers, cabbage and tomato, with ranch dressing), extra shredded Parmesean cheese and
a roll. Dessert was more plain Eli's cheesecake. The other choice was ricotta-cheese stuffed chicken breast (with asparagus and little wedge-shaped fried potato bits). Excellent service for all 8 of us on the 737."

Flying from: Chicago ORD to HoustonIAH, October 2002
Class: First
Meal type: Afternoon snack
Drink: Water and more Chilean red wine
Comments: "The "fajita chicken salad" came with lettuce, chicken pieces, red and yellow pepper strips, tomatoes, shredded cheddar and small pieces of
crunchy tortilla. Two tubs of Caesar-style dressing, a standard fruit bowl and a breadstick came with the salad. Dessert was a warm Mrs. Field's chocolate-chip cookie. Yum! The other choice was a "gruyere-topped chicken sandwich" that nobody else in the 8-person 737 cabin seemed to order."

Flying from: Washington IAD to Chicago ORD, October 2002
Class: First
Meal type: Lunch
Drink: Water and some Chilean red wine.
Comments: "The warm chicken breast sandwich came with melted cheese, red and yellow tomatoes, onion, lettuce, mayonnaise and a rather bland pasta salad on the side. The roll was a bit on the heavy side so I only ate the top half. The fruit bowl was OK, with orange slices and green and orange melon pieces. The plain Eli's cheesecake is probably my favorite of the many types UA serves. A nice, simple meal, but well done. Note: This 757 had the new-style cabin decor, as seen in the blue and gray fabric on the seatback."

Flying from: Hong Kong to Chicago, 5 November 2002
Class: First
Meal type: Lunch - Marinated Filet Mignon with herb jus and sautéed shallots, potatoes au gratin and tourne carrots with snap peas
Drink: French Haut Medoc - United is not providing a wine list - claim it allows more flexibility - perhaps serve cheapest wines available on spot market.
Comments: "The visual impression does not belie the overall meal. Unappealing to look at and unappealing to eat. The meat was extremely over cooked and had absolutely no flavor. The shallot and herd au jus were okay, as it was a flavor. The potatoes were over cooked, and had too much cheese, making the meal difficult to eat. The peas and carrots were rubbery and flavorless as well. The meal was preceded by warm sesame scallops with a chili garlic sauce which were quite good - too bad it was not the main. Cheese course was dominated by cheddar and other generic cheeses."
