Flying from San Francisco to Frankfurt, 12 December 2002
Aircraft type & class: Boeing 777, Business Class
Meal type: Dinner - Not pictured: An aperitif of Piper-Heidsieck
Champagne, accompanied by three small bowls of roasted nuts (I simply can't
get enough of these!). Rating: 10. Tasty bubbly, replenished frequently by "experienced"
flight attendants who must have been pursuing their duties since the dawn of
commercial aviation. Nuts slightly salted, served warm. Great!
"To Begin": Spiced shrimp & Parma ham, served with cocktail sauce
and fresh lemon. Rating: 6. Solid, yet standard fare. The "classic caesar"
dressing for the wintery salad had unfortunately gone off. I elected to stay
with the bubbly...
"Main Course": Coriander-crusted halibut with lemon beurre blanc,
served with chorizo rice, asparagus and carrot batonnets. Rating: 7. The halibut
tasted just okay, but the chorizo rice was great. I finished the plate and enjoyed
another glass of bubbly.
"Dessert": The menu listed an "International Cheese Selection",
featuring Camembert (sic) and Black Diamond Cheddar cheese, plus a couple of
water crackers and red grapes. Rating: 5. When I go camping the selection is
more varied...
Not pictured: A glass of Grand Marnier on ice to finish off the meal ... as
the aurora borealis put on a magical display near the Greenland coastline. Rating:
10.

Aircraft type & class: A320- Economy
Meal type: Breakfast - Cheese Omelet, hash browns, sausage,
croissant, and fruit salad
Drink: OJ
Comments: "I was not too impressed by this meal at all.
The omelet was dry and pretty much tasteless until I added salt. The sausage
was just too nasty looking to even try however, the croissant was somewhat edible.
The fruit was fresh and the best part of the meal."

Meal type: Lunch - A turkey and cheese sandwich, bbq potato
chips, pepperidge farm, milano cookies, and some breath mint strips.
Comments: "I would think it would be diffucult to really
screw up a turkey sandwich... but apparently someone worked very hard to achieve
that goal. It was kind of like a brick, with that really icky, fake, cheese-like
stuff. Thank goodness the chips and the cookies were okay."

Aircraft type & class: B-777, first class
Meal type: dinner, breakfast - The dinner was okay ----- note
the lack of enthusiasm. During the night I was offered a hot sandwich: cheese,
turkey and ham. I felt sorry for the turkey and pig. Breakfast offered scrambled
eggs Hollandaise which I chose .... I had no idea that things were so bad in
Holland. The meal was literally inedible. However, UA got me to SFO safely.
Drink: I did not dare.
Comments: The next time I must fly to the Orient I think I'll
choose an Asian carrier.

Meal type: Dinner - Cheese-stuffed pasta shells in a tomato
sauce.
Drink: White wine
Comments: "Bland filling, bland sauce, bland pasta. Overall
this was among one of the worst pasta meals I have had on UAL. The peach cheesecake,
however, was excellent."
Rating 1-10 (worst-best): 4, and that's only because of the
cheesecake

Meal type: Dinner - Cold chicken wellington on a bed of flavored
pasta with sun-dried tomatoes.
Drink: Gin & Tonic
Comments: While the appearance of this meal is god-awful (the
gray pasta is a mushroom-flavored pasta), it was quite tasty. The Sun-dried
tomatoes were
tangy, the chicken wellington was tasty, and the peach-flavored cheesecake was
absolutely delicious.
Rating 1-10 (worst-best): "I rate this meal a 9, subtracting
1 point for the appearance."

Flying from: LAX to SYD, 4 December 2002
Aircraft type and class: 747-400, "C" or business
Meal type: Very late dinner - the picture shows a starter of
prawns and prociutto with a small salad and a piece of herbed bread. I skipped
the main. But... on my return flight one week later I had a perfect beef filet
cooked rare which almost nobody ever does on any carrier. No picture of that
one though.
Drink Jack Daniels and soda. a glass of chardonnay and water
galore.
Comments: "Everything was fresh, small and appropriate
for a very long haul, all night flight where it does seem best to keep it simple.
Also note that the knives are still plastic but silver coloured to make a better
match. As usual on this run, it was a fairly geriatric crew but they really
are good about making sure everyone stays hydrated. I really like united sometimes
because they just keep it all so simple. Whether that is the intention or not
is another story."
Rating: 6.
