Meal type: Snack
Crisps (potato chips), chocolate bar, roll withg ham and cheese.

Business or leisure trip?: Leisure
Meal type: Lunch
Salad, Chicken with carrots and spinach risotto, camembert cheese + grapes + crackers, Cadburys vanilla ice cream.
Drink: Bloody Mary, Red wine, coffee
Comments: the meal tasted much better than it looks. The spinach risotto was nice. Was good to get some British Ice cream for dessert. The UA coffee is pretty good stuff. Overall, I think that the UA Y-class food service is still OK. Other airlines are cutting their service levels but UA still manage to do a good job.

Route: Honolulu to Los Angeles, 14 Nov 2003
Flight Duration: 5hours
Class: Economy class on B767-300.
Meal type: Refreshment-Dinner-Breakfast (??)... a bag of mini-pretzels
Drink: a can of Seven-Up out of a selection of soft drinks/juices/beer/ tea/coffee.
Comments: True, this red-eye flight was scheduled to depart at 10pm arriving LAX at 5am; true it left on time arriving slightly ahead of schedule; true the cabin crew was cheerful and efficient and the cabin clean and fresh. But it was anyway a 5 hours trans-pacific flight and many passengers (including myself) didn't have dinner before departing, so all we got was a bag of mini-pretzels (!!) and a can of soda, plus - 20 minutes before landing - a juice! I was not expecting much food, but this was far beyond my expectations: UA has been cutting too much on costs, and it shows... Funny they proclaim on the paper napkins "We're glad you're here", but then give you nothing to munch!
Rating 1-10 (worst-best): for the flight experience +8, for the food: 0!

Route: London to San Francisco, 11 Nov 2003
Ticket price: $438
Flight duration: 10 hours
Aircraft type & class: B777 - Economy
Business or leisure trip: Leisure
Meal type: Lunch
Contents of the meal: Pasta, salad with Asian sesame ginger dressing, Camembert cheese with grapes with crackers, roll and butter. Ice creme for dessert.
Drink: Gin and tonic.
Comments: Pasta was way too salty. The pasta on the way out was so good I had to take a chance with this one. A big disappointment comparatively. The pasta was also dry at the edges. Roll was suprisingly fresh for coming wrapped in plastic.

Route: San Francisco to London LHR, 7 Nov 2003
Ticket price: $438
Flight duration: 10 hours, 30 minutes
Aircraft type & class: B777 economy
Business or leisure trip: leisure
Meal type: lunch - Stuffed shells, salad, roll, grapes, Brie, crackers, cheesecake.
Drink: Syrah from France (really good)
Comments: This was delicious. Not only was the pasta cooked perfectly (amazing for being on an airplane), but the Brie was nearly the best I've ever tasted (I don't eat a lot of Brie but it was so good, I almost asked the gentleman next to me for his). The service was also excellent. This was my first international trip so that may be part of it, but it seemed as if United had put its best flight attendants in the fleet on that flight. My buddy who I met in London flew in from Chicago and had the same meal choices on his flight said the beef that he picked was not very good. Stick with the pasta.

Route: SEA (Seattle) to IAD (Washington Dulles), 3 Nov 2003
Ticket price: $356
Flight duration: 4 hrs
Aircraft type & class: 757, economy
Meal type: Breakfast
Small orange juice container, orange-ish cake in cellophane wrapper, omelet, sausages, and homefried potatoes.
Drink: Coffee
Comments: The omelet wasn’t special, but reasonable (can one mess-up an omelet?) and arrived nicely cooked. The sausages looked too disturbing to eat (see picture). The orange-ish cake was a curiosity – its wrapper had no descriptors on it, save the nutrition facts, so it was hard to tell what exactly it was before the first bite. It was indeed orange flavor, which is different, but was overwhelmingly sweet and sterile – much closer to a Twinkee than a breakfast cake. It also stuck to my teeth, which didn’t help its evaluation.
Rating 1-10 (worst-best): 7 (points off for sausage).

Ticket price: USD $278 RT
Flight duration: about 4 and one-half hours
Aircraft type: B777-200, Y class
Business or leisure: Leisure
Meal type: Breakfast
Contents of the meal: Fruit Plate selection; Orange juice and a vanilla muffin
Drink: Coffee (not shown)
Comments: Fruit plate was fresh though melon slice and pineapple spear were a tad under-ripe, however, the muffin was soggy. Something felt missing. Got hungry again by the last hour of the trip and the pretzles with the second round of drinks didn't relieve the hunger. Good thing I had bought a bagel prior to take off.

Route: Frankfurt - Washington, 19 July 2003
Flight duration: about 6hrs
Aircraft type & class: Boeing 777, economy
Business or leisure trip: Leisure
Meal type: snack
Contents of the meal: crisps, Kit-Kat and a roll
Drink: Coffee
Comments: "Care for a snack, sir?" Looking at what was in the box, we didn't really care for a snack! Chio Chips Paprika, a huge Nestles Chunky Kit-Kat and a roll with a slice of what may have been cheese and two slices of turkey sausage. The glaze on the roll stuck to one's upper gum on biting into it - what a way to be woken up! Coffee was OK, though.
