Comments: It is great to see hot meals return to domestic business and first class on United. The meal was preceeded by a pre-departure beverage, cocktail in the air, and a warm moist towelette. The meal was great, and would have recieved a 10 if the roll was warm. Good job, United!

Route: GRU to ORD, 5 May 2004
Flight duration: 10 hours
Aircraft type & class: B767, Business Class
Business or leisure trip: Leisure
Meal type: Various
[513] * Appetizer and salad. I ate all my salad before taking the picture. Salmon with leeks and capers. Foccacia bread
[514] * Fettuccini with shrimp and scallops. It was delicously
Comments: There were no menus. They also did not serve dessert. It was either the cheese plate or nothing (maybe the crew were saving it all). Also, the crew hurried through the entire service so those geriatic FA's could get their rest before they shrivel up and die! The entree came very quickly after the appetizer. I am glad I didn't pay full fare for this because it certainly was not worth it!

Flight duration: 10 hours
Aircraft type & class: B767, First Class
Business or leisure trip: Leisure
Meal type: Various
[509] * The Queen Mary cart with a selection of imported cheese, crackers, fruits and port. (sorry, it was dark in the cabin and I didn't want to use my
flash)
[510] * Cheese plate
[511] * Ice cream sundae!!
[512] * Breakfast about 1 1/2 hrs before landing in Sao Paulo. An omelete with hollandaise sauce, sausages, bacon and potatoes. Croissant with jam.
Rating 1-10 (worst-best): Great food and great service. I was seated next to a very grumpy frequent flyer who treated the FA's really badly. She handled it extremely well though. I also forgot to take pictures of the dinner before the cheese selection picture.

Route: NRT-SFO, 28 Mar 2004
Ticket price: USD700 (upgraded from Y due to oversales)
Flight duration: 10 hrs
Aircraft type & class: 744 C
Business or leisure trip: business
Meal type: Japanese Obento
Appetizer: spicy vinegared horse mackerel, shrimp with lily root, shiitake mushroom stuffed egg, simmered sweet potato and udon noodles.
Main course: silver cod in soy mirin sauce with shimeji mushrooms, vegetables, gingko nuts and steamed rice
Drink: green tea and United’s in-house junmai sake
Comments: I have had Northwest’s Japanese meal in business class many times and this one was a bit nicer as there were two servings (appetizer and main meal served in separate dishes) – on NW you used to get just one box with a lot of food on it. Now I hear NW has a new Japanese meal menu but haven’t had it yet. Other than this, I was shocked at how tacky and cheap the paper menu was (one sheet folded in half – drink menu printed on the back sleeve!). UA has discontinued all soft drinks other than orange juice, Pepsi and tomato juice – so, no cranberry juice for example. The sake was not so great; NW has ginjo sake which is of higher quality and cleaner taste. Many small plates and dishes were plastic, which was also tacky. However, I was impressed that the tray liner and tea cup had a cherry blossom design – the flight attendants said UA changes their Japanese meal setup every season, which shows a lot of attention is being paid here (clearly, the Tokyo UA kitchen must have a nice budget!). The service was so-so, one flight attendant was very nice and the other very rude. The Japanese F/As weren’t very sophisticated (haphazard, rushed announcements, not especially friendly) as compared with NW’s Japanese IFSR’s who are hand-picked.
The food was of good quality ingredients and aesthetically arranged. The cod was a bit greasy but otherwise good.
