Route: Washington (Dulles) DC to Casper, WY via Denver,CO (IAD-DEN-CPR), date: 08 April 2005
Ticket price: USD $413
Flight duration: 3 hours to Denver, 1 hour to Casper
Aircraft type & class: United Boeing 737-300 to Denver, SkyWest EMB-120 Brasilia to Casper
Business or leisure trip: leisure
Meal type: snacks (purchased to Denver, free to Casper)
Contents of the meal: Snack box (USD $5) contained bread sticks and cheese dip, salsa, beef jerky, trail mix, and a chocolate chip cookie. A package of biscuits was distributed as part of the first beverage service. A package of Plane Cheesy crackers was distributed on the flight between Denver and Casper.
Drink: Ginger Ale
Comments: United offered 3 different snack boxes for sale. This was called the "Quick Pick". The price of the snack box may be a bit high although a package of beef jerky is about USD $2. The combination of beef jerky and salsa was odd, but there was no other food item flat enough to eat the salsa. The bread sticks and cheese whiz would not have served any utility in consuming the salsa. And I refused to use my fingers. Salsa without chips of any kind is really an affront. I don't remember the contents of the other offerings, except that one contained slices of pepperoni. The little cheesy crackers that were served on the flight between Denver and Casper fine - they were rather cute, too.

Route: IAD - BRU, 10-11 March 2005
Ticket Price: Part of larger trip
Flight Duration: ca. 7 hrs.
Aircraft and class: Boeing 767 - Economy
Leisure Trip
Meal Type: Preordered Vegetarian Dinner
Contents: Wheat Roll (cold), Red Lentil and Couscous with Curried
Vegetables and an unidentifiable sauce (perhaps a weak attempt at
curry), Iceberg Lettuce salad, Babaganoush (my girlfriend's came with
pita, they forgot mine), Vinaigrette Dressing
Drink: Water, soon followed by soft drink.
Comments: Actually not all that bad, and relatively large, but the sauce and babaganoush had a weird synthetic taste.

Ticket price: 80,000 miles for free ticket
Flight duration: 11 hrs
Aircraft type & class: B767-300ER (3-class intl config), Business Class
Business or leisure trip: Leisure
Meal type: Dinner, Breakfast 1 hr prior to arrival
Contents of the meal: Please refer to Menu
Drink: Great red wines with the steak!
Comments: A very good meal, although nothing that made me say "wow" - even on the longest international nonstop route out of Dulles on United in Business class. I guess wow is now only reserved for United First on long routes... a true shame cost cutting has lowered intl Biz class to "good." The senior flight attendants were very accomodating and friendly.

Route: Tokyo (NRT)-Los Angeles (LAX), October 2003
Flight duration: 9.5 hrs.
Aircraft type & class: Boeing 747-400, Business
Business or leisure trip: Leisure
Meal type: Dinner
Contents of the meal: From the menu: “Japanese Obento selection; An appetizer of spicy vinegared horse mackerel, shrimp with lily root, shiitake mushroom stuffed egg, simmered sweet potato and udon noodles. A main course of silver cod in soy mirin sauce with shimeji mushrooms, vegetables, ginkgo nuts and steamed rice. Dessert: Chocolate Paris-Brest.” I also had a dinner roll. Other choices were: “To begin: Crabmeat, proscuitto, mozzarella and tomato appetizer; Cucumber wakame salad with vinaigrette. Garden salad; Asian sesame ginger dressing. Main course: Filet mignon with New Orleans seasoning; Garlic mashed potatoes, vegetable medley and pomodoro sauce or Cashew-crusted chicken with natural jus; Sage and onion stuffing soufflé with broccoli florets. Dessert: International cheese selection; Brie and Marble Cheddar cheese.”
Drink: Sake for me, Jack and Pepsi for my friend; nuts for us both. Green tea with the main course.
Comments: Nice Obento; I liked the silver cod so much NRT-SIN I had a different version of it on this flight. It’s always fun to open up the little containers and see what’s inside. The dessert looked like a chocolate bagel but was actually very tasty. Unfortunately the crew was less attentive than their Asian counterparts but not really terrible.

Contents of the meal: From the menu: “Tomato and chive omelette with Hollandaise sauce; Chicken sausage, hash-brown potatoes and a fresh fruit appetizer.” Also a croissant/butter/preserves. Other choice: “Fresh seasonal fruit plate with creamy yogurt.”
Drink: Water, coffee, and orange juice.
Comments: Not bad but not great. The sauce was kind of sloppily applied and the hash browns were more like country-style potatoes. Also, the fruit wasn’t quite ripe.

Aircraft type & class: Boeing 747-400, Business
Business or leisure trip: Leisure
Meal type: Pre-arrival snack
Contents of the meal: From the menu: “Peppered roast sirloin; Slices of peppered roast sirloin atop new potato salad and mango with Thai chili sauce. Dessert: Opera cake.” Also came with a roll/butter. The other choice was “Capellini all’Amatriciana; Pasta with a pancetta bacon and tomato sauce.”
Drink: A bit of champagne (Billecart-Salmon, I think) and a scotch and water on the rocks, then coffee with dessert.
Comments: The beef was a tiny bit tough but had a nice flavor, with the sweet mango giving a good contrast to the peppery meat. The opera cake was delicious.

Contents of the meal: From the menu: “To Begin: Your selected entrée will be served with breakfast breads, butter and fruit preserves. Main Course: Hainanese chicken and rice with oyster sauce; Braised bok choy, chili sauce with fresh ginger and a fresh seasonal fruit appetizer.” I chose a croissant. Other choices were “Mozzarella scrambled eggs; Chicken sausage patty, tomato gratiné, roasted new potatoes and a fresh seasonal fruit appetizer” and “Continental breakfast; Breakfast pastries, fruit, yogurt and cereal.”
Drink: Coffee, orange juice, and water.
Comments: This is my favorite breakfast on United. The chicken was super-tender under the skin and the chili sauce provided a nice zing. Excellent fruit bowl, too, with huge grapes. The croissant was a bit rubbery but not bad. The service was again very nice.

Drink: Sparkling wine pre-takeoff, water and a nice Kabinett with dinner, port with dessert.

Drink: Cocktails before lunch – Johnnie Walker Black and a big bottle of Crystal Geyser water, given to me by the flight attendant on the previous flight from SFO-LAX. Ice water and white wine with lunch.
Comments: This actually was pretty good for an economy meal. The chicken was moist and tasty, the shrimp and melon tasted fresh and the cheesecake was simple but tasted like actual cheesecake. The salad was a bit of a disappointment; it was just a pile of lettuce leaves.

Drink: Coffee, ice water
Comments: This tasted OK but the crust was a sort of dry. It came in a branded, foil package that was a little bit tacky. Nice fruit bowl, though. I stashed the oatmeal raisin bar in my bag to eat later.

Contents of the meal: fruit, omelett (no pic as I dropped the camera on the floor while trying to photo it). Dinner, filet with applewood smoked bacon demi-glace, ice cream
Drink: Pepsi, G&T, Keenwood California Chardonnay
Comments: The breakfast omelett was really very good, served with pork sausage and oven-roasted tomatoes. The dinner was not good, the smoked bacon sauce was far too strong, the meat tasteless (perhaps that's why they make the sauce so strong). The crew were excellent the purser could earn a living as a dj or doing ad or film voice overs as his voice was so smooth - a kind of Dutch/American Terry Wogan, he took every first and business class food order - for both services - addressing ever passenger by name - impressive.

Flight duration: 1+45
Aircraft type & class: A-319 FC Upgrade
Business or leisure trip: Leisure
Meal type: Lunch
Contents of the meal: Chef's salad. Other choice was a deli sandwich, which looked like a mess. It was the standard UA salad with lettuce, strips of ham, smoked turkey, american and swiss cheese, hard boiled egg, olives, and cherry tomatoes with honey dijon vinagerette dressing. After that we were given the usual warm cookie.
Drink: Bloody mary, and 1999 Crow Canyon Cabernet [quite good] and then coffee later with the cookie.
Comments: There has been quite a bit of bashing lately regarding [US] domestic FC service. This flight was an exception to 'the rule'. Seems like UA is at least trying to maintain their dignity, especially for a flight shorter than two-hours! Of course it always helps to be on an A-319 with only eight-seats in FC for more personal service, as opposed to 24-seats on a B-757.
