Route: ORD - HKG, 21 May 2006
Ticket price:
Flight duration: 15h 00m
Class: economy
Aircraft: Boeing 747
Meal: MOML - Meal 1: Grilled chicken with pasta and sauce. Warm pita bread. Salad that includes lettuce, onions and tomatoes. Salad dressing. Chopped onions with some kind of chickpeas and lemon and green onions (possibly to be eaten with the pita bread). Halva for dessert.
Midflight snack: Cold vegetarian fried rice with sauce halva.
Meal 3: Couscous with some strange patties that was tasteless. Pita bread. Cubed fruits.
Drink: Water and orange juice.
Comments: Meal 1: The chicken was a big piece though a little dry on the outside but was surprisingly easy to cut and chew. The sauce was really good. Pasta was a little too little... they should have served us more. I really liked it and went well with the salad. The chopped tomatoes combo was a little strange for my tastebuds. I didn't finish it, nor the pita bread. The halva's plastic packaging was very difficult to open. I had to bite the plastic to open it, and that too, was a real hassle. Gave up trying.
Midflight snack: The fried rice was surprisingly good. Not the greatest though. Finally found a way to open the halva wrapping. Had to bite the plastic off and use a lot of force.
Meal 3: This was the worst meal of all. It looked interesting, but was very tasteless. I couldn't even make out what those patties were. Fortunately, I wasn't starving when they served me this.

Flight duration: 14h 00m

Meal: MOML - Meal 1: Poached fish with curry and dal. Long grain rice. Warm flat bread in foil. Grilled squash and cucumber. Cut fruits. Yellow ball dessert.
Mid flight meal (no photo): Cup of water with small sandwich (sliced tomato with 2 slices lettuce). No protein in this meal.
Meal 3: Poached fish with curry and aubergine. Long grain rice. Warm flat bread in foil. Cubed fruits.
Drink: Orange juice.
Comments: The main meals were palatable. They were the same poached fish served during the entire flight, the same curry too. The mid-flight meal was laughable - plain sandwich with no tuna or any kind of protein in it. Just a small slice of tomato and lettuce. That was it. Unfortunately, I was so disappointed, I didn't take a photo of it. My neighbour's midflight meal was nothing great either - cup noodles.

Meal: Dinner - Salad, dinner roll, chicken breast, potatoes, zucchini, ice cream sundae
Drink: white wine
Comments: I took this same flight in the same class 2 weeks prior. As I already had the other option- Halibut (posted here also!) I opted for the chicken. It was tasty but uninspired. I still have the same comment posted about the earlier flight- As this is the continuation of an international flight from Paris, I expected slightly higher level of service as this is First on a 3 class 767. The only noticeable difference was that they used the larger nicer wine glasses found only in International First Class. - Suggestion to United- especially in First, you should offer a larger salad as a first course. Wouldnt cost much more and add a lot to the experience. Small salad on the same tray as the main course feels real cheap!!

Dessert
International cheese selection
Shropshire Blue, Cornish Yaarg
Drink: Bodega Norton Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 Listrac Medoc
Comments: ** See the menu in menus section **

Great meal. LHR catering is definitely above par at least compared to what I have seen out of IAD departures lately. The duck was great, the sesame dressing wonderful, and the filet even a little pink and very juicy. Well done on this one UA.

- I skipped the snack as I was sleeping, although it is described on the menu.

Meal: Breakfast, Dinner - Breakfast first as this is a morning departure- fruit, croissant, omelette, home fried potatoes, grilled ham slices.
Dinner prior to arrival- salad, chicken, asparagus, cheesy potatoes, sliced cheeses and grapes for desert
Drink: a bunch of them :)
Comments: Quantity is the one bright spot with these meals- I came away full. United DESPERATELY needs refreshing in all their meals. Ok we realize you just came out of a painful very long bankruptcy, but new flavors will help greatly!! Especially in international business class I expect higher quality and nicer presentation. Other than that, these meals tasted perfectly fine and left one feeling full.

Meal: Lunch - Warm Mixed Nuts to start
Caesar Salad with Hot Grilled Chicken Breast
Warm Roll
Baked-on-board chocolate chip cookie (not pictured)
Drink: California Chardonnay
Comments: I asked for the chicken to be plated separately and the F/A was happy to do so. The salad was a very large portion and the lettuce was nice and fresh, though a little wilted. Tomatoes aren't typically in a "Caesar" salad, but these were a nice addition, very ripe and flavorful. The chicken was juicy and perfectly cooked. The wine is a very cheap California Chardonnay that I have quickly tired of since United started serving it a couple months back. It's really pretty hard to complain about anything when you get to ride in an international business class configuration aircraft on a domestic route like ORD-LAX.

Flight duration: 1h 45m

Meal: Light Lunch - Choices were Cobb Salad with shrimp or cold chicken breast with fruit. I chose the Cobb Salad. By definition maybe not a Cobb Salad, but it had shrimp, hard boiled egg, crumbled bacon, diced tomatoes, black olives, and some swiss cheese, with thick ranch dressing. Also included a warn cookie and sourdough roll, but no butter for the roll.
Drink: Bloody mary and coffee.
Comments: Not bad really as the SNA-DEN flights are usually less than two-hours. Good to see that United is trying to maintain any dignity they have left as a full-service airline. Too bad the presentation is a throw-back to the 70s, with the tray and odd paper liner.

Meal: Lunch - Drink and Snack

LUNCH
Cheese sauce, spinach, tomato shell pasta;
Salad with Balsamic dressing;
Bread & Butter;
Grapes, cheese (cammonbert) & crackers

SNACK
Cold turkey (ham?) with cheese on pretzel roll;
Chips;
Kit Kat
Drink: Diet Coke & Water
Comments: The pasta was great! I highly recommend it over the chicken option. Grapes were very tasty, but with seeds.

The pre-landing "snack" was a real let down. Came in a box. The pretzel roll was great, but ruined by the mystery meat and two different types of cheeses. Salty greasy chips are not a good choice after several hours in the air. Kit Kat was the best part of the snack.

My first time on United international, and I was pleased on the whole

Meal: Lunch - Cold Mixed Nuts With Drink of Choice
Warmed Chicken Tortilla Wrap with Warm Salsa

Comments: This was a pretty average meal. United used to have much better lunches on this route in the past. No salad provided, no roll, and the nuts served with the drink were not warm. No warm towel either! Presentation could have been better, but the meal at least tasted very good. The other choice was a glazed salmon salad, which was served with the same cookie, and a roll.

Meal: Lunch - Warm Teriyaki-Glazed Salmon accompanied by an Asian Salad with Sesame-Ginger dressing
Chocolate chip cookie
Whole wheat roll
Drink: California Chardonnay
Comments: The salmon was perfect - a nice large portion, and unusually for airline fish, perfectly cooked and not the least bit dried out. The salad was quite tasty, although the packaged dressing is kind of declasse'. The white wine they served was labeled a Chardonnay but tasted more like a Sauvignon Blanc, which was fine - the crisp flavor and acidity went well with the fish and salad. Overall a very respectable meal for a <2 hour domestic flight. 1 point off for the lack of table linens and the fact the wine was served ON the tray instead of separately.

Drink: White wine and water
Comments: Certainly happy for the upgrade for this cross-country flight and therefore to get dinner. The salad was fresh, the roll was good, and chicken was reasonably moist for on a plane. The vegetables were a bit overdone, but edible. The carmel on the dessert was a nice touch, and the flight attendants kept my wine glass full for the meal, then slacked off afterwards.

Comments: Breakfast: (1) hash brown is too oily; (2) pork saugage is great and juicy; (3) o9mettle is OVERCOOKED, terrible texture.
Evening Snack: (1) the cup noodle taste terrible and water was just warm, not hot enought to soak the noodle within 3 minutes; (2) almond cookie is too oily, taste terrible.

Dinner: Chicken with gravy, peas and carrots, cheese potatoes, salad (with Italian dressing), 2 rolls, cheese, crackers, grapes, Beechdean strawberry ice cream
Second snack: Ham & cream cheese sandwich, Walker's crisps, Twix bar
Drink: 7-Up, apple juice, water
Comments: The Fiesta snack mix was salty. There was very little spice or flavor.
The chicken was delicious, as were the potatoes. The peas and carrots were bland. The salad was slightly wilted. There was a white roll and a wheat roll which were fine. The cheese with crackers and grapes was a nice touch. The ice cream was great!
I did not like the ham and cream cheese sandwich...an odd combination! The crisps and Twix bar were good though.
The service was good - the flight attendants were friendly.

Comments: This is UA's p.s. three-class service. Passengers in First can use the International First Class Lounge (also pictured). Although breakfast flights are usually disappointing, it was a good breakfast. I was especially impressed by the bread basket. The bagels were large and hot. Snack before landing should have included a hot soup. I think it used to, especially in First.

Meal: Lunch - Parmesan and herb crusted chicken breast (cold) with aioli; slice of prosciutto; 2 slices melon; 1 slice fresh pineapple; grapes. Choice of warm rolls - seven grain pictured. Fresh baked Mrs. Fields chocolate chip cookie.
Drink: Bloody Mary
Comments: The chicken was very moist, perfectly cooked and the crust was tasty, although it's too bad they could not serve it hot because I think it would have been better that way. The prosciutto was of substantially better quality than you would expect on an airplane and went great with the canteloupe. Overall the best BusinessOne lunch I had out of dozens on this route in 2005.

Aircraft: Boeing 737-300 ex-Shuttle by United configuration
Meal: Lunch - Sliced chicken breast with mayonnaise, three slices of melon, 10 grapes, wedge of cheddar cheese, a very hard, ice cold roll and a packaged cookie
Drink: South African Riesling
Comments: This inedible and gross meal is proof of why you do NOT want to waste your money paying for (or even upgrading into) First Class on the ex-Shuttle 737s. Unfortunately there's no way to know in advance if your flight will use one of these aircraft. Since they have no proper galleys, all meals have to be packaged in TV-dinner-like trays as you can see. What you cannot see is that the entire meal, except for the frozen roll, was ROOM TEMPERATURE (ugh!) I sent it back uneaten except for the cheese which was OK. The mayo was quite possibly spoiled judging by the temperature and smell. The chicken was dried out. Melon was all soaked in some sort of fruit-preservative solution so even that was inedible. Rating of 1 only because zero isn't allowed.

Meal: Snack Box - "Quickpick" - $5
Pemmican hickory smoked beef jerky, Just the Cheese Baked Cheddar Cheese Snacks, Barrel O' Fun Blue Corn Tortilla Chips, La Victoria Thick n' Chunky salsa, SunRise honey coated trail mix, Lorna Doone shortbread cookies, Fruit Breezers Cool Berry candy, biscotti (free), moist towlette, and colorful placemat.
Drink: Full can of Pepsi
Comments: I decided to try out a United snackbox just so I could put it on this site...they only had two of the four available by the time they got to my row so I picked the "healthier" choice (the other one was pure sugar) called "Quickpick". The chips and salsa were the best part. Included was some sort of processed cheese snack which was horrible looking and tasted terrible. I bit into half of one and immediately spit it out. United should delete this one from the snackbox. Beef jerky is beef jerky and there was a lot of it so that is a slight plus. The trail mix was just OK. The shortbread cookies and the candy were a good finisher. There was also a free biscotti that everyone got and I have to say it was pretty poor. That said, I am not a picky eater so for me this "meal" was slightly above average.
Unfortunately this is the norm for US domestic service now, but I would say it was a decent value. Overall they give you a good variety and quantity of snacks that taken together would cost you probably $2.50-$3.00 on the ground. I would have really liked a prepackaged salad to try out though. Those are easy to make and a lot of people like salad. I would have paid a bit more for that.

Everything inside was processed, shugary, fatty, salty and full of artificial flavors. Seriously, why can't United offer some fresh and tastfull snacks for purchase. European carriers make handsome money by selling fresh and tempting food and snacks on board.
The whole United experience proved annoying. Dull cabin interiour, unhelpfull crew, pathetic, overpriced food. Our connecting flight in Denver was cancelled and we were reebocked to Frontier. A much better product!
A bonus point to United however for giving out free headsets so one can listen to the fascinating cockpit communications channel. Another bonus point because our bags made the rebocked connection to SLC.

Drink: Domaine Chandon Blanc de Noirs NV
Comments: The fritatta was just OK. For the amount of ingredients it didn't have a lot of flavor. The turkey sausage was excellent. The fruit was very fresh. Not pictured because they served it later was the flaky, buttery croissant that was way above average for domestic US airline food, meal, catering. The crew service in p.s. Breakfast: Potatoes, bacon and eggs, melon pieces, croissant.
Drink: Water, Victoria Bitter; orange juice, coffee
Comments: Dinner: This piece of beef gave me a workout. It was a too tough for the little plastic knife, though I tried and tried! Couldn't chew it either! Yikes! The rest of the meal was reasonably edible at least.
Breakfast: More too-chewy meat, but at least the plastic knife could make it through this stuff! The melon wasn't quite ripe enough. But I ate pretty much all after sleeping for most of this long flight!

Breakfast: Pancakes wrapped around bacon, sausage, flakey roll, mellon pieces,
Drink: Red wine; orange juice, coffee.
Comments: Dinner: Despite the very TV-dinner-like contents, the meal was reasonably moist, well cooked, even the mashed potatoes were fairly creamy. I ate all of it before heading to sleep for this long flight.
Breakfast: The choices were an omlette or pancakes, and while I usually would pick the eggs, I have to say the pancakes were pretty nice! Was surprised to find the bacon inside, so I'm sure this wasn't especially healthy, but good after the long flight.
Nothing as good as you'd get in Business or First, but for the cattle car, I was pleased.

Comments: Normally, there is a very good meal served on United

much cheese. Also, unlike UA, Continental serves a normal meal even on their red-eye flights. I think United should offer passengers a

Desert was an ice cream sundae with vanilla and strawberry ice cream,
choice of warm fudge sauce and/or whipped cream, and a cookie.
Drink: Red wine
Comments: The dinner was not bad ... chicken was reasonably moist and the tomato paste sauce was a good addition. The salad was better than a typical airplane salad, probably because of lots of tomatoes. The ice cream sundae for desert was a really nice touch and bumped up the score from 7 to 8. Better than the warm cookie I've previously gotten on United domestic first class. The flight attendants did a good job of keeping my wine glass re-filled and being attentive.
