First Class
Breakfast , Special meal: no
This mediocre breakfast, which was something between a higher quality microwave breakfast from the supermarket and a meal at iHop or Dennys, was the staple breakfast for United domestic first class for almost 3 decades on many routes. Bland and often watery, it was this or a fruit bowl on routes like SFO-DEN and SFO-OGG alike all across the country. If you were hungry enough, it tasted fine, but never good or great. Salting it excessively did help the eggs and the (often overcooked) potatoes. I was always disappointed when this was the only hearty option, which was often the case. It really shows how United cleaned things up since the merger with Continental. Overall, I still rate it above average as the portions were large (though less-so for a 5 hour flight like this than the 2 hour flights with the same meal).
As for the service, I had an economy boarding pass for a flight to HNL boarding next door, but saw that first class was wide open on this flight to OGG. So I requested to switch flights and was rushed down the jetway where the agent (upon seeing my first class boarding pass) did the unthinkable and re-opened the aircraft door she had just closed! Between that and the 20+ open first-class seats with frequent drink refills (uncommon at the time as you had senior and often grumpy crews on the early AM Hawaii flights), I have to say this was the best of many flights to the Islands I ever had with pre-merger United. But is it fair to say that I still wish they had a more "Hawaiian" option for breakfast? :)
